Why Living Wills are Important in Florida in 2023? © Cynthia C. Rignanese, Esquire

As we get older, planning for the future is a crucial step in managing our health and well-being. In Florida, having a Living Will is an important document that allows individuals to make clear decisions regarding their medical care should they become incapacitated or unable to communicate. It is especially important for seniors, as it provides a safeguard for their healthcare wishes both now and for the future. In this article, I will discuss why Living Wills are invaluable for seniors in Florida.

As we age, our bodies begin to change. We may develop illnesses or conditions that require ongoing medical care and treatment. If we become incapacitated, a Living Will ensures that our wishes for medical care are carried out.

What does a living will do? The purpose of this document is to direct the provision, the withholding or withdrawal of life-prolonging procedures in the event one should have a terminal condition. It directs your doctor and family to not artificially prolong life, if there is no reasonable expectation of recovery. This document is not used on a routine day or doctor visit. It is only used at the stage of end of life.

For seniors in Florida, a Living Will is an important tool in ensuring that their end-of-life wishes are respected. It is a way to maintain control over their medical care and treatment, even if they are no longer able to communicate their wishes themselves. In a state with a large elderly population, Living Wills provide an important safeguard for seniors and their families.
